“Rescue and Retreat”
The whole journey of God’s pilgrimage can be described as ‘rescue and retreat.’ God comes after us, again and again, to save us from the messes we’ve made, only to have us then retreat from the One who saved us. We keep choosing everything other than God to satisfy our deepest desires. When we recognize this about ourselves, we are humbled and we realize our limitations. The awareness of our sin makes us all the more grateful for God’s steadfast love. And we feel ready to choose God again.
