Our passage features John the Baptist speaking. Andrew and Simon are among those who are hearing and resonating with John’s message. And this testimony of John quickly turns to Jesus being present and seeing these early disciples, seeing who they were and seeing what they would become, including Simon to become Peter, and Nathanael who he saw under the fig tree. It seems that for John, that Jesus calling disciples to follow and to grow into some expanded version of themselves is at the heart of the gospel.
