In the Gospel of John, the wedding at Cana is Jesus’ first miracle. Compared to the many stories of Jesus healing the sick and reaching out to outcasts, a story about providing more wine to keep a wedding celebration going seems like a peculiar introduction. And yet, it is a story that embodies much of what we will learn along the way: Jesus’ compassion for ordinary people and his tendency to redeem and transform rather than push away or condemn.
