We have been hovering over the story of Lazarus for several Sundays, and this week we return to it one more time as we focus on Lazarus’ resurrection. John presents Lazarus not only as a man who is brought back to life, but in some ways as a picture—or “type”—of our own experience of dying to an old way of being and being raised to new life in Christ. Lazarus stands at a transitional moment: he has been given new life, but he comes out of the tomb still wrapped in the grave clothes of his former state. In much the same way, we can experience new life in Christ while still carrying old habits, wounds, fears, and ways of seeing ourselves. What does it mean to live as people who have been given new life, even as we are still learning to let go of the things that belong to the old one?
